Following fourteen years of civil war, Liberia is recovering ![]() under the leadership of a democratically elected President, Ellen Johnson Sirleaf. Basic services such as electricity and pipe borne water are unavailable in most of the country with significant needs to build infrastructure. To give some idea of the extent of disruption caused by civil war, by 1994 over 80% of the residents had been displaced as a result of warring factions within the country. Today, unemployment is estimated at 80%, with most of the population of 3.2 million living in extreme poverty. About half are living in Monrovia. Although public schools have begun to re-open, they are operating with inadequate budgets and facilities. ![]() Your sponsored child lives in or near Gbarnga, a town of 50,000, 4 hours east of Monrovia.
